Greetings:
With the staging of this CFU Adult TamFEST, we are proud
to recognize the 30th Anniversary of this very popular tambu-
ritza festival which showcases our Croatian culture and heri-
tage here in North America. Began in 1987 by our late National
President Emeritus Bernard Luketich and his colleagues in the
National Administration, the CFU Adult Tamburitza Festival as
it is officially known, has grown to become a must attend event
within our society’s social calendar of activities. A record set-
ting thirty-two (32) Adult Tamburitza ensembles and folklore
groups have indicated their intentions of participating in this
music and dance festival. We applaud their commitment to our
society and to the perpetuation of our Croatian folk culture.
Just as the City of Pittsburgh stands at the confluence of
the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and traces its history
to the blockhouse of old Fort Duquesne (later renamed Fort
Pitt by the British), this festival was made possible through
the desire of our CFU membership to perpetuate our shared
Croatian music and dance by coming together at an annual
festival. We owe a large degree of gratitude to those early in-
dividuals, CFU officers, musical directors and other interested
tamburasi, who saw the need for an event that would provide
a venue for those members who desired to sing, dance and
play Croatian folksongs and dances.
While the location for each CFU TamFEST changes from
year-to-year, the basic format has not changed over the last
twenty-nine years. CFU Adult Tamburitza Festivals have been
held throughout the United States and Canada with Pittsburgh
serving as host city for six previous festivals. Pittsburgh, the
birthplace of the forerunner to the Croatian Fraternal Union,
the National Croatian Society, served as the meeting place
where a group of Croatian immigrants on September 2, 1894
moved forward with their plan to unify our Croatian people.
Their desire was to create, or form, a Croatian society, a Union
that would serve socio and economic needs of our Croatians
living in the US and those who were soon to follow at the dawn
of the industrial revolution. Pittsburgh, where the home office
of our society still remains; however, now serves a member-
ship across the United States, Canada and back in Croatia.
We are pleased to recognize the fervent interest of our
membership displayed annually by their loyal attendance and
participation. We pause at this time to reflect back on those
“stari” tamburasi who are no longer with us, either through
advanced age or death. They were the ones who graced our
stage with their presence and provided countless hours of lis-
tening enjoyment to their friends and acquaintances as they
played our Croatian melodies as “songs from the heart”. We
extend our gratitude and praise to them for their membership
in their own CFU Adult Tamburitza ensemble and for their
ardent participation in our annual TamFEST.
We acknowledge the Rev. Phillip Pribonic, pastor of St.
Joan of Arc R.C. Church of Library, Pennsylvania, who will
serve as guest celebrant for the tamburitza mass that occurs
each year on Sunday morning.
Additionally, it is our sincere pleasure to welcome for
the first time to Pittsburgh since her appointment as Direc-
tor of Hrvatska Matica Iseljenika (HMI), Ms. Mirjana Piskulic.
Likewise, we are sincerely pleased to introduce the Zagreb
Folk Dance Ensemble Dr. Ivan Ivancan (ZFA) to our mem-
bership once again here in the United States.
